About

One engineer, and the reason that is the point.

Fincham Systems is a single senior consultant by design. Here is who that is, what the practice is for, and what it deliberately will not do.

In my own words

I've spent 17 years inside IT organizations, and most of that time cleaning up environments that worked fine but nobody could explain.

The pattern repeats at every company size. Something gets built under time pressure. It works, so nobody goes back to it. Then the exceptions start stacking up: an access grant here, a policy carve-out there, a deployment step only one person knows. None of that is negligence. It's just what happens when the people who can do the work are the same people who have no time to write it down.

Then something forces the question. A customer sends a security questionnaire. An insurer asks for evidence. An acquirer starts diligence. Somebody resigns. And the company finds out its environment isn't really an asset it owns. It's a set of arrangements it has been renting from whoever happened to configure them.

I started Fincham Systems to do that work properly, and to do it myself. I'm not building an agency. I take a small number of engagements where the person who scopes the work is the person who does it, and I leave behind something the client can actually run. That's why documentation is a deliverable here rather than a courtesy, and why the handover gets its own budget instead of whatever is left when the build runs long.

It also means I'll tell you when something isn't worth doing, when a tool you're being sold won't fix your problem, and when another firm is a better fit than I am. A consultancy that agrees with every request is working for its own invoice.

If it is not written down, it did not happen. Everything I build is meant to survive me leaving the room.

Background

Where the judgment comes from.

Roles and disciplines rather than a client list. Past work belongs to past employers, and this practice does not claim it.

Now

Founder and principal consultant

Fincham Systems LLC, registered in Colorado in February 2026, formalizes consulting work I had been doing for years. The practice is deliberately small: a handful of concurrent engagements, all of them mine end to end.

Recent

Infrastructure and cloud operations leadership

Vice-president-level roles leading infrastructure, DevOps and software teams for SaaS and managed-service organizations. Building Azure estates from nothing on Terraform, running compliance readiness programs, and owning production platforms in the round.

Before that

Engineering management and managed services

Directing engineering teams delivering managed cloud and endpoint services to clients from small business to large enterprise, and designing the automation and baseline configurations those services ran on.

Start

Systems and operations

Systems administration, network infrastructure and production operations from 2009, including payment-industry environments where audits, key management and vulnerability handling were routine rather than exceptional.

Education: Hiram College. Fincham Systems LLC itself holds no compliance certifications. Readiness for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 is work we deliver, never a badge we display.

Working knowledge

The tools this practice lives in.

A statement of hands-on depth, not a partnership claim. Where something is outside this list, we will say so.

Questions

The ones people actually ask.

Who is behind Fincham Systems?

Zachary Fincham, a Denver-based technology consultant with 17 years in infrastructure, security and engineering leadership. He is the founder, the principal consultant, and deliberately the only person who will work on your environment.

Why work with a one-person firm instead of an MSP?

Because the work you are buying is judgment, and judgment does not scale by adding juniors. A managed service provider is built to run a help desk at volume, which is a genuinely different discipline and often the right purchase. What they are rarely staffed to do is design an Azure landing zone, harden a tenant against a named benchmark, or get an organization through SOC 2 readiness. That is the gap this practice fills.

What is the catch with a solo practice?

Capacity. We take a small number of concurrent engagements and there is no bench to absorb an overrun. When capacity is full we say so rather than stretch and deliver late. There is also no 24/7 on-call and no help desk. For either of those we will point you at someone who does it properly.

Where are you based and who do you serve?

Denver, Colorado. Work is remote by default and clients are across the United States, with on-site discovery and handover sessions for organizations in the Front Range.

Start here

Thirty minutes, no pitch.

You will be talking to the person who would do the work. That is the whole proposition.
